Jerome James is a Hawaiian born musician, music producer, and music instructor. With a foundation of Jazz rooted drum skills, Jerome has evolved into a multi-percussionist, multi-genre composer, and electronic music producer. Born into the musical family of recording artist Chuck James, Jerome took to the drums at a late age and excelled at a rapid rate. Although Jerome's youth living in Hawaii was influenced by pop music, then alternative underground, it was his exposure to Jazz that inspired his journey into playing drums. Inspired by drumming greats such as Philly Jo Jones, Max Roach, Billy Cobham, Stuart Copeland, Brian Blade, and Jeff(Tain)Watts, Jerome emersed himself into exploring the essence of Jazz drumming. Under the guidance of his father Chuck James, Jerome began teaching drums in the early stages of his own development. The combination of teaching music, rigorous eight hour-a-day practice regiments, gigging with various bands(of various genres), and enrollment in the University of Hawaii Music Programs led to his accelerated skill development and understanding of music.
Seeking to expand his musical and cultural horizons, Jerome decided that it was time for a challenge and moved to NYC in 2001. He played with various groups in venues all over Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens, further learning and developing his craft as a musician, drummer and composer. Jerome lived and performed in NYC for five years till fate brought him back home to Hawaii.
Having sustained an injury to his arm from a terrible bike accident, his drumming career was put on hold. As Jerome healed, he realized he needed to be in nature to rehabilitate and gain insight into a new direction. He felt drawn to a more organic and sustainable alternative to urban living. He moved to the jungles of the Big Island and spent the next three and a half years there. Despite his injury, Jerome moved forward to a new era of his musical development through original electronic music production. He created three jungle albums. Each of which were prolific reflections of his Big Island experiences of living off the grid, forraging for food and living in community.
Currently, Jerome is living on Oahu and like many of us, has been experiencing a time of metamorphosis. The last two years he has working in his Honolulu studio producing new music constantly and expanding into a more dynamic entertainer. Jerome seeks to utilize his many well seasoned skills as a drummer, music and media producer, visual artist, teacher, performance and musical art director/performer, event host, composer, and personality to help lead the artistic world community. "It is important for us as artisans to take responsibility in helping the planet transition into the new age".
In the upcoming months Jerome's new endeavor is to take his knowledge and energy on the road to places like Portland, Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and beyond. His talents are so refined, he is ready to bust them out anywhere, anytime! "Collaboration is what I want to do. Let's live our dreams together!"
